Urgent Care Q & A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care provides immediate medical attention to serious but not life-threatening injuries or illnesses. You can come into Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC as a walk-in. You can also call the office to let them know you’re on your way and the details of your injury or illness.

When should I go to urgent care?

Urgent care is for injuries, illnesses, or accidents that require immediate attention but aren’t life-threatening.

Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC urgent care treats various injuries, such as sprains and strains, simple bone fractures, cuts or lacerations that require stitches, and knee injuries.

In addition to injuries, urgent care can treat numerous illnesses, including the following:

  • Fevers
  • Flu
  • Sinus infections
  • Skin rashes
  • Skin infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Eye irritation or infection
  • Sore or strep throat
  • Gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration

Minor accidents, such as sports injuries, minor burns, minor car accidents, and slips and falls are other common reasons for needing urgent care.

What kinds of services are available at urgent care?

A wide variety of treatments are available at the urgent care service. Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC has on-site diagnostic facilities, including a lab for blood work, urinalysis, swab tests, and digital X-ray and CT scanner imaging services.

The team can prescribe medications, including antibiotics, painkillers(not controlled substances for walk-in visits), anti-inflammatories, antivirals, and steroids. These are all available at the convenient on-site pharmacy. Your provider can also run IVs (intravenous fluids) to help you recover from dehydration.

Your urgent care provider can immobilize sprains and strains, and stitch cuts. If the team is unable to treat your condition, they’ll arrange for you to go to the nearest emergency room for immediate emergency care.

When should I go to the emergency room rather than urgent care?

Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room if you have a life threatening emergency.

Emergencies include:

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Compound bone fractures (where bone is visible through your skin)
  • Pregnancy-related issues
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Fever or illness in newborns
  • Poisoning
  • Signs of a stroke or heart attack
  • Loss of control of bodily functions
  • Serious head, neck, or back injuries

Urgent care is the middle ground between your primary care provider (PCP) and the emergency room. If you’re having a life threatening emergency, don’t go to urgent care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency hospital.

If you’re experiencing an urgent medical issue, go to your nearest Cookeville Medical Clinic RHC urgent care office. Walk-ins are welcome. You can call the office on your way, request an appointment online, or simply walk in.
